China Projects
Agricultural Export and Investment Opportunities(Heilongjiang, Hebei and Shaanxi Provinces)
Project 1: Saline-Alkali Tolerance Gene to Facilitate Planting of Switchgrass (Heilongjiang)
Heilongjiang Province wants to plant Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.) throughout its plains but cannot due to alkaline soils. The current pH levels of the soils are between 8 and 9. Provincial officials are seeking a solution to their problem and would like to obtain a gene that could be used to improve the “saline-alkali tolerance” of the Switchgrass.
Project 2: Grapeseed Processing (Hebei)
There are about 2.5 million kg of grapeseeds produced every year after vintage in Hebei Province. Hebei officials are interested in exporting the grapeseeds and securing a company/investor to establish a grapeseed oil pressing facility. Given that grapeseeds can also be used to produce environmentally friendly furniture, provincial officials would also like a company/investor to establish furniture manufacturing operations in the province utilizing the grapeseeds.
Project 3: Prevention of Frozen Harvest for Apricot Kernels (Hebei)
An inland city in the province produces approximately half of the apricot kernels in China. A cold snap usually comes in right before the harvest and reduces production by about 20 percent. Provincial officials want to import technology and products that could be used to enable more of the crop to resist the cold and be harvested.
Project 4: Skye Flora for Planting in Saltmarsh Along the Coast (Hebei)
Agricultural development is impossible along some areas of the coastline of Hebei due to saltmarsh. Skye Flora (Suaeda Maritima or Sea blite) found in North America is of interest to these officials as they believe it could help increase agricultural production in the province if grown in saltmarsh areas. Provincial officials want to import Skye Flora and work with a strategic partner to have it planted along the coast.
Project 5: Apricot Kernel Processing (Hebei)
About 5 million kg of apricot kernels are produced each year in Hebei Province (accounting for about 50 percent of the total production in China) and officials would like foreign investors to establish factories in the province to process the seeds into essential oils and extracts (cosmetics applications).
Project 6: Pomegranate Processing (Shaanxi)
About 100,000 mu (approximately 6,666 hectares) in Shaanxi is used to grow pomegranates and the production scale is among the largest in China. However, the growing and processing methods are traditional. Given the rising interest in pomegranate fruit and juice concentrate, Chinese officials would like foreign investors to establish modern peeling and processing operations in the province.
